Nethercutt House
Why This Place Matters: The Nethercutt House is one of Grayson’s oldest continuously occupied homes and connects the city to Civil War service, county law enforcement, and 19th-century domestic life.
The Story: Built around 1870, the Stephen Nethercutt House is known for its solid brick walls, eleven-foot ceilings, and multiple fireplaces. Stephen Nethercutt served in the Union Army during the Civil War, joining the 22nd Kentucky Regiment of Volunteers in 1861. He rose to the rank of captain and later returned to Grayson, where he became a deputy sheriff and then sheriff of Carter County.
The home stands as a reminder of the people who returned from national conflict to help build and govern local communities.
