Main Street, Grayson, KY 41143

Historic Downtown / Mainstreet

Why This Place Matters: Downtown Grayson has been the city’s commercial and cultural heart for generations.

The Story: Main Street has seen major change over time, including fires in 1883, 1914, 1915, and 1921. Businesses came and went, roads changed, and new forms of entertainment and commerce shaped everyday life.

Historic downtown once included dry goods stores, banks, markets, law offices, theaters, and gathering places such as The Sweet Shop. In the 1940s, the Clark Movie Theater and Grey Theater operated side by side, while Sam Porter’s Corner Market stood at Main and Pomeroy.

Although much of Grayson’s present-day commerce has moved toward Carol Malone Boulevard and I-64, downtown remains central to the story of the city.

Stand on Main Street and name one kind of business you think would have been important to downtown life in the 1940s.
